Maulana Mamunul Haque Released from Jail Amidst Warm Welcome

Maulana Mamunul Haque, the former joint secretary general of Hefazat-e-Islam, was released on Friday morning from Kashimpur High Security Central Jail in Gazipur, ending his period of incarceration.

Mamunul’s release was confirmed by Senior Jail Superintendent Subrata Kumar Bala, who also mentioned that a large group of supporters and Hefazat activists were waiting impatiently for him to return to the jail gate.

The arrest of Mamunul Haque in a madrasa in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, on April 18, 2021, garnered a lot of media attention. According to a person with knowledge of the situation, security concerns caused the process to be delayed, despite the original release date being set for Thursday night.

The well-known Islamic scholar is accused in 41 charges filed with different police stations. He is well-known for being involved in legal disputes. Mamunul was discovered at a resort in Sonargaon, Narayanganj, on April 3, 2021, with a woman.

This event set off a contentious series of events that culminated in his imprisonment. Fifteen days after the incident, Hefazat fans and activists stormed the resort, causing it to be looted and leading to Mamunul’s arrest.

The woman who was involved in the Sonargaon incident then filed a charge against Mamunul at the Sonargaon police station on April 30, 2021, which further complicated the matter.
